Introduction

Taking the class to the computer suite can be a challenge, especially if it is for the first time or it is a rare event for your class.

The key is to have a number of sessions in quick succession to start with so that you can sort out those annoying teething problems and then make the session a regular thing after that. Once a week or once a fortnight would be ideal as anything beyond that might require a quick refresher course for some students.

Whatever you sort for your class always be prepared for at least one (but usually about five) student to have logging on issues. There will be problems due to the following reasons:
  • a student has forgotten their username or password
  • a student has never been issued with a logon
  • a student's account has been disabled
  • there is a glitch in the system
Just logging on brings about a heap of exciting opportunities for annoyance:
  • a student doesn't have a school network logon
  • a student's school network password doesn't work
  • a student doesn't have an internet logon
  • a student's internet password doesn't work
  • a student doesn't have a WeLCom (Moodle) logon
  • a student's WeLCom password doesn't work
  • a student isn't enrolled in your WeLCom course
Think about each of those and have a strategy for calmly dealing with them.
